10 Tips for Buying Hummingbird Feeders
Purchasing a hummingbird feeder should be fun, easy, and affordable.
Often times though it can be frustrating and you end up with a feeder that either breaks or does not attract hummingbirds.
Because of this, I am providing 10 Tips for Buying Hummingbird Feeders.
If you do want to learn about tips and tricks for attracting more hummingbirds, I recommend reading my article:
Tip #1: Buy a Dish or Bottle Feeder
Hummingbird Feeders are made as either dishes or bottles.
Dish Hummingbird Feeders hold nectar in a saucer below the feeding ports. These types of hummingbird feeders are easy to clean and have no leaks.
Bottle Feeders resemble a bottle and nectar flow into feeding ports that hummingbirds eat from. These types of hummingbird feeders look more stylish but are harder to clean. They are also more likely to leak.
Tip #2: Buy a Feeder with Perches
Perches are areas where hummingbirds rest. Perches can be on plants and flowers or can be on hummingbird feeders.
If you want to attract and keep hummingbirds then I recommend purchasing feeders with perches.
If you do buy a hummingbird feeder without a perch then I recommend purchasing one separately.
Tip #3: Buy Plastic
One of the main reasons bird watchers buy new hummingbird feeders is because they break.
Help prevent this by purchasing durable plastic feeders.
If you cannot find a plastic feeder you like then make sure you purchase one of the glass feeders I recommend.
Tip #4: Purchase a 12-ounce Feeder
As you shop for hummingbird feeders you will notice they come in all shapes and sizes.
I recommend purchasing a 12-ounce hummingbird feeder.
The reason you want to buy this size hummingbird feeder is that anything smaller will require you to refill too much. And anything larger can sometimes lead to your nectar spoiling.
Tip #5: Buy a Bright Color Feeder
Hummingbirds are attracted to red and bright colors.
If you want to attract more hummingbirds simply make sure you purchase a feeder that is red or is made of bright colors.
Tip #6: Purchase an Ant Moat
One of the worse things I have experienced with hummingbird feeders is ants.
Ants are attracted to the sugar of nectar and can take over your feeder. This means no more hummingbirds.
I recommend purchasing a hummingbird feeder with an ant moat.
If you cannot find one that has an ant moat then I recommend purchasing one separately.
I recommend purchasing: Hummers Galore Ant Moat.
Tip #7: Purchase Classic or High-View Feeder
Based on the construction of a classic hummingbird feeder it is sometimes hard to actually view the bird.
Because of this, you may want to consider a high-view hummingbird feeder.
High-view hummingbird feeders offer no benefit to the bird but offer an unobstructed view for you.
Tip #8: Purchase an Easy to Fill Feeder
Hummingbird feeders are much more difficult to fill then your average bird feeder.
Because of this, I recommend purchasing an easy to fill feeder. All of the options I provide in this article are easy and quick to fill.
Tip #9: Purchase an Easy to Clean Feeder
Do you want to know why most people stop using their hummingbird feeder?
It’s because they are too difficult and time-consuming to clean.
Purchasing any one of my recommendations to help make life a little easier.
Tip #10: Look for Extra Features
Competition in the hummingbird feeder industry is fierce.
Because of this, most companies will offer added features with their hummingbird feeder.
This includes lifetime guarantees, extra nectar, or even multiple feeders.
Make sure to keep an eye out for extra features when you purchase your hummingbird feeder.
Best Hummingbird Feeders
Did you know hummingbirds need to feed every 15 minutes?
Did you know hummingbirds can visit over 1,000 plants and flowers in one day?

Best Window Hummingbird Feeder (1 type)

If you want a window hummingbird feeder that does what it advertises then I recommend purchasing the Woodlink Window Glass Hangar.

Best Handheld Hummingbird Feeders (2 types)
A common question I get from bird watchers is whether or not handheld hummingbird feeders really work?
I can say with certainty that I have used them with consistent results. The key is patience and time.
Handheld hummingbird feeders are much different than any other feeder. You don’t have to worry about leaking, ants, or durability. You are limited with how many hummingbirds you will attract.
Nonetheless, it is one of the most amazing experiences you’ll ever have.
When it comes to handheld hummingbird feeders, Aroma Trees makes consistently amazing ones.
What I love about Aroma Trees is that they are constantly trying to improve their product. They sell their hummingbird feeders in packages of 2 and include a patented red bead to attract hummingbirds.
They also specifically made this product so that it can be enjoyed by all ages.
At $10, it will be one of your best purchase!

The ZUMMR Hummingbird Ring Feeder has it all.
It comes in different colors. Also, it is dishwasher safe. It will not fade. It is made BPA free.
Also, it is made in the USA.
The best part about this feeder though is its price. It’s $5.
Because of the low price tag, I recommend purchasing a handful of these feeders. The more feeders you have out the better chance you have of attracting and keeping hummingbirds in your yard.
Bonus – How to Attract More Hummingbirds
By purchasing one of the 15 best hummingbird feeders on this list you are off to a great start to attracting more hummingbirds.
But no matter how good of a hummingbird feeder you purchase, the feeder itself can’t be the only thing you do to attract hummingbirds.
If you want to attract more hummingbirds, I recommend doing the following (in addition to purchasing one of the above feeders)
- Use more than 1 hummingbird feeder type. Try different styles and types of feeders. Some may work better than others in your yard and garden.
- Keep your hummingbird feeder out all year. This way it ensures you get early hummingbirds in the spring and the last of them before winter.
- Keep your feeders out of the sun. The more sunlight the quicker your nectar can spoil.
- Keep your feeders at least half full at all time. Hummingbirds will quickly look for other food if your feeders run out.
- Change your nectar every 3 days to ensure no spoilage.
- Use more than 1 feeder. Male hummingbirds are territorial and this will ensure you get more than just one hummingbird
- Location is key. Keep your feeders near native flowers, shelter and perching areas, and near shaded areas.
- Spacing is also important. Keep your feeders at least 20 feet apart to attract a wide range of different hummingbirds.
Now that you know a little bit more about the best hummingbird feeders, how to best use them, and other tips to help attract more hummingbirds I would love to know:
